The Derby Senior Center has been reaccredited by NCOA/NISC (National Council on Aging/National Institute of Senior Centers) for a period of five years from September 2022 to September 2027. The Center was first accredited in May 2011, the first in Kansas to earn the designation, and has maintained accreditation status since then.
“We have one of the best senior centers in Kansas right here in Derby,” said Mayor Randy White. “I had the opportunity recently to cook for the seniors at a fall festival and greatly enjoyed my time talking with them and being part of their event. That is one example of the many great things our senior center does.”
A celebration event will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Derby Welcome Center Austin Room, 611 N. Mulberry Rd. All seniors are invited to attend to commemorate this accomplishment.
The year-long accreditation process included a self-assessment and on-site peer reviews completed virtually. The self-assessment process focused on nine standards: purpose, community, governance, human resources (including volunteers), planning, evaluation, fiscal management, records, and facility. These standards are used to evaluate the performance of a senior center and prepare it for accreditation.
