Fourth Provost Candidate on Esu Campus Thursday

The final of four finalists for Emporia State’s next provost and vice president for academic affairs will be on campus Thursday (Nov. 17) to interview and meet various stakeholders as well as tour the Emporia community.

Dr. Alberto “Bert” Ruiz currently is associate athlete director for student athlete excellence and professor of kinesiology at the University of Louisiana Monroe, a position he has held since 2021 after joining ULM as vice president for academic affairs in 2019. Ruiz also served at Texas A&M University-Kingsville from 2001 to 2019 in various roles including interim department chair of bilingual education and dean of the College of Education and Human Performance as well as on faculty in kinesiology.

Ruiz earned his bachelor of science and master of science, both in kinesiology, from Texas A&M-Kingsville in 1993 and 1995 respectively, and an Ed.D. in physical education from the University of Houston in 2001.

During his interviews Thursday in Emporia, Ruiz will meet with the ESU search committee and administrators and tour the city of Emporia. Two forums are planned:

  • A campus and community forum, which is open to all ESU students, staff, faculty and the Emporia community, will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Preston Family Room on the second floor of the Memorial Union. Please note the location change.
  • A separate forum for faculty will follow from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. in the Preston Family Room on the second floor of the Memorial Union.
Those who attend the forums are asked to scan a QR code at the event to share feedback with the AGB Search, the firm organizing the search for Emporia State University.

For more information, including PDFs of Dr. Ruiz’s curriculum vitae and letter of intent, go online to emporia.edu/provost search.
