Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Chief of Police, Captain, and/or Sergeant the Police Officer position performs duties in the protection of life and property and the preservation of order in the City of Wellington. The main responsibilities of this position include enforcing federal, state and local laws in accordance with department rules and regulations. Patrol duties include enforcing traffic laws, investigation of crimes and accidents, and providing public assistance. This employee will be required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency conditions. This work involves an element of personal danger. A valid Kansas Driver’s is required.

Minimum Requirements

• Must be a United States citizen;
• Must be at least 21 years of age by date of hire;
• High School diploma or GED;
• Must not have been convicted of a crime that would constitute a felony under the laws of the State of Kansas, a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a misdemeanor offense that
• reflects on the honesty, trustworthiness, integrity or competence of the application;
• Must be free of any physical or mental condition which adversely affects the ability to perform the essential functions of a police officer with reasonable skill, safety and judgment;
• Must be of good moral character sufficient to warrant the public trust in the applicant as a police officer;
• Ability to read, speak and write the English language fluently.

Essential Functions

• Enforces Federal, State and local laws, statutes and/or ordinances;
• Conducts traffic and criminal investigations;
• Investigates and intervenes in domestic disputes;
• Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints;
• Completes all necessary official forms and reports as required in a timely manner;
• Searches for, collects, and identifies evidence found at crime scenes;
• Appears and testifies in court proceedings;
• Serves civil and criminal process and warrants;
• Apprehends and arrests violators in a safe and constitutional method following established rules and regulations set by the department, state, and the courts;
• Directs traffic and issues citations for traffic law violations;
• Operates a patrol vehicle routinely patrolling the city assisting citizens with personal, family and social problems, provides police escorts when necessary/directed;
• Answers citizen complaints and takes necessary corrective action;
• Alerts the citizens of hazardous and dangerous conditions (from serious traffic accidents to severe weather conditions);
• Informs the public on laws and general information;
• Performs duties, tasks and assignments in a competent and proficient manner;
• Arrive to work on time, is available for work while at work, and is available for work when needed;
• Use directed and self-directed work time in an efficient manner;
• Assists other law enforcement and emergency service agencies as required.

Marginal Functions

• Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned;
• Attends training seminars and classes as required by the Chief of Police;
• Assists with animal control tasks, when necessary;
• May be required to cross train in other suitable city departments.

Position Requirements

Experience: One year of law enforcement experience preferred. Employee is expected to acquire the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months in the position.  Education/Licenses: High school diploma or GED. Some college is preferred. Must satisfy all requirements as set forth in KSA 74-5605 “Qualifications of Applicant (Police Officer) for Training Course; Requirements”. Must obtain certification as a Police Officer and complete 40 hours of continuing education training annually as required by the state law enforcement training commission. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas Driver’s License.  Technical Skills: Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, law enforcement techniques, good communication skills (written and oral) and mathematics. Must have the ability to proficiently operate communications equipment, weapons, and other related law enforcement equipment; ability to meet and deal tactfully with the general public and to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing; the ability to access, input and retrieve information from the computer. Ability to analyze situations and react effectively and reasonably.  Problem Solving: Frequent problem solving exists. Problems involve handling citizen’s complaints, civil disputes, victim trauma, finding evidence for conviction of crime, and locating witnesses.  Decision Making: Frequent decision making responsibilities. Decisions include determining whether to issue a warning, citation, make an arrest, or determining the proper use of force to use in a situation.  Supervision: Work may be performed independent of direct supervision according to established procedures and/or laws. Employee is expected to follow lawful directives of supervisory personnel. Work performance is reviewed by supervisor. Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over personnel.  Accountability: Employee is accountable for the proper recording and collection of evidence and valuables encountered in the performance of duties.  Personal Relations: Frequent daily contact with the general public and frequent contact with other law enforcement and emergency service personnel.  Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions exist relating to public law enforcement. Hazardous, strenuous and dangerous situations may arise in the apprehension of alleged criminals, interviewing suspects and/or victims under extreme conditions, and in the response to various emergencies and other situations. Exposure to human blood, body fluids, and other hazardous substances may occur. Adverse weather conditions when patrolling is a factor in this position. Shift work is required as is overtime work.  Physical Requirements: Physically, mentally, medically and psychologically fit to perform the duties of the position. Must have the ability to pass and maintain all physical requirements and activities of the law enforcement training center. Ability to perform other hazardous, strenuous and dangerous activities during situations that may arise in the apprehension of alleged criminals or other situtions as they may occur. Between 5 – 10% of the time requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry or push heavy (150 lbs or more) objects. Ability to walk, bend, stoop, kneel and climb ladders and/or stairs. Ability to distinguish sounds to include a full range of tones and volumes. Must have 20/20 corrected vision in both eyes.
