City Seeking Applicants for Boards & Commissions
The community needs your help to guide Derby’s future. Derby has several upcoming volunteer openings for its boards and commissions. Applications are available at DerbyKS.com/boards and are due March 16 at 5 p.m.
Boards with open seats include:
Board of Construction Trades and Appeals: 1 opening, 2-year term
Meets as needed
Board acts as arbitrator between the Building Official and aggrieved parties and serves as a recommending body to the City Council for code adoption.
Community Development Advisory Board: 1 opening, 2-year term
Meets quarterly (Feb./May/Aug./Nov.) at 4:30 p.m.
Board maintains the city's economic development plan; make recommendations to the City Council on development projects for which city incentives are requested; proposes changes to policies governing economic development activities; and advocates for programs and activities that will improve the city's economic conditions.
Derby Recreation Commission Board: 1 city-appointed opening, 4-year term
Meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m.
Library Board: 1 opening, 4-year term
Meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.
Autonomous board responsible for establishing policies and regulations to govern library property and operations.
Parks & Urban Forestry Board: 1 opening, 2-year term
Meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 11 a.m.
Board provides support, ideas, educational and environmental programs and events to engage Derby residents in the park system. The board's goal is to provide great recreational facilities and green spaces for our active community. The board also acts as the Tree Board, which deals with environmental issues and our urban forestry needs. This is an excellent board if you are an active user of the city's park and recreational systems.
Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals: 2 openings, 3-year term
Meets on the 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m.
The Planning Commission is responsible for things like the annual review of the Comprehensive Plan; preparing, adopting, and maintaining Zoning and Subdivision regulations; holding hearings on special uses, zoning changes, and vacation requests; reviewing and approving plats, commercial site plans; making recommendations to the City Council to approve or disapprove requests.
Senior Services Advisory Board: 4 openings, 2-year term
Meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 9 a.m.
Board comments and makes recommendations to the City Council with respect to the social, health, educational, nutritional, physical, recreational, and intellectual well-being of the senior citizens of Derby.
