Open House is Feb. 21 for Kansas Highway 55 reconstruction

To help residents better understand what will be happening and to address individual concerns on the upcoming reconstruction of Kansas Highway 55 (4th Avenue), an open house will be held on Feb. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Belle Plaine Community Center, 528 N. Merchant.

The City of Belle Plaine and the Kansas Department of Transportation will be making major improvements to the K-55/4th Avenue corridor in coming months. This $2.9 million project will provide a new, wider concrete street, new curbs and gutters, improvements to storm drainage, and a walking path from Line to Logan.

City staff, city council members, KDOT, the design engineers, and utility representatives are scheduled to be in attendance. Residents are encouraged to come and look at the plans to determine the impact to property and travel patterns. This is the last opportunity to address concerns, as the final engineers’ drawings will be submitted to KDOT on March 9.

By April, the utility companies will start moving their lines and poles back in the easement. Residents should be prepared for temporary outages in electric, phone, and Internet as that work is under way. All companies will work to keep those outages as short as possible and the work should be complete by June. Once the street construction begins, be prepared for a full year of work.

Please attend the Feb. 21 meeting for additional information on this project.
