Kelly Bielefeld, WPS Executive Director of College and Career Readiness, will lead the Wichita Public Schools as its future superintendent effective July 1, 2023. The Board of Education announced their unanimous decision on March 10, 2023, pending final negotiations of the contract. The BOE selected Bielefeld after receiving feedback from teachers and other district employees, students, parents, business leaders and community members on what they considered to be essential leadership characteristics, personal qualities and critical issues facing the next superintendent.

“The Board is pleased to hire Mr. Bielefeld as our next superintendent,” said Board of Education President Sheril Logan. “He has broad and robust experience in numerous K-12 academic areas that make him well-suited to tackle a diverse array of opportunities and challenges as our district moves forward.”
“I believe in the Wichita Public Schools. We have amazing people here. I am very honored to accept the position. I believe by working together we can meet the needs of everyone in our district.” Mr. Bielefeld said. “I will have listening sessions once I become superintendent to get to know our staff, our schools and their priorities so we can continue to move this district forward.”
Mr. Bielefeld is currently Executive Director of College and Career Readiness for the Wichita Public Schools. He supports secondary schools with visionary college and career ready leadership, written and administered federal grants, created our Future Ready Centers in cooperation with WSU Tech, created our Graduation + model, been active at the state and local level, and he has served on various internal leadership teams. He has served in five school districts in Kansas, including Wichita, Clearwater, Derby, Renwick and Goddard. He has been a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. Superintendent Dr. Alicia Thompson announced that she is retiring at the end of the school year.
